Abstract
A nitric acid plant with a production capacity of 45,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Sungonlegowo Industrial Area, Bungah District, Gresik Regency, East Java. The plant will operate continuously 24 hours per day for 330 working days per year and will employ 181 personnel. The product generated from this process is nitric acid with a concentration of 65–66%. The demand for nitric acid in Indonesia shows a stable growth trend, supported by the development of downstream chemical industries such as fertilizer manufacturing, dye production, and explosive processing. The production process utilizes ammonia and air as raw materials, which are fed into a reactor where an oxidation reaction occurs to produce nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). The NO formed is further oxidized with excess air to produce additional NO₂. The reaction takes place in a catalytic reactor using a Platinum–Rhodium catalyst to enhance the conversion of ammonia and air. The reactor effluent is then directed to an absorber, where NO₂ is absorbed by water to form nitric acid (HNO₃) with a concentration of 65–66%.
