Abstract
The characteristic of paper made from pineapple leave is that it contains non wood cellulose. The digestion process uses a soda process, which is classified as a paper synthesis process using a chemical method using solvent NaOH. The soda process removes lignin in materials containing lignocellulose by breaking down the crystal structure in lignocellulose so the lignin can be separated and obtain a fairly high cellulose yield. Pineapple leaf fiber classified as a non wood fiber which is has the potential to be used as a basic material for making paper pulp with a fairly high alpha cellulose content, namely 69,5-71,5%, lignin 4,4-4,7%. The aim of the research is to find a relativity good comparison of NaOH concentration and digestion time in making paper made from pineapple leaves which will produce characterization in terms of chemical properties, namely cellulose and lignin content. in terms of physical properties, namely grammage and tensile resistance which are in accordance with SNI. In this research, the synthesis of paper will be carried out and the characterization of paper made from pineapple leaf pulp will be tested using the soda process with variations in NaOH concentration of 1; 1,5; 2; 2,5; 3 N and digestion process time of 25, 50, 100, 125, 150 minutes. The best research result obtained using a concentration of 3N NaOH with a digesting time of 150 minutes. The results obtained from the chemical properties were cellulose content of 90,18% and lignin content of 4,07%. The results of the physical properties are that the paper grammage is 52,3111 gr which meets the paper quality requirements but the results of the tensile strength are 8,79 N/m and produces a tensile index of 16,803x10,11 Nm/g.
