Abstract

The welding process is one of the metal joining techniques widely used in the manufacturing industry, so the quality of the weld must be controlled to prevent defects that can reduce the strength of the joint. One important factor in the FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding) process is the CO₂ shielding gas pressure, which serves to prevent oxidation and porosity in the weld metal. This internship aims to determine the effect of CO₂ gas pressure variations on the quality of welding results using the Liquid Penetrant Testing type of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method. The test was conducted on four CO₂ gas pressure variations, namely 5 bar, 10 bar, 15 bar, and 20 bar. The test results showed that at a pressure of 5 bar, there were indications of defects in the form of oxidation and porosity, while at pressures of 10 bar, 15 bar, and 20 bar, no defects were found according to the ASME Section V Article 6 standard. These findings indicate that too low a CO₂ gas pressure causes suboptimal protection of the arc and molten metal, thereby increasing the potential for welding defects. Thus, increasing the CO₂ pressure provides better welding quality and meets NDT inspection standards. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference in setting welding parameters and improving production quality in the manufacturing industry. Keywords: Welding, CO₂, FCAW, NDT, Liquid Penetrant Testing, porosity.
