Abstract

The rise of mental health content on social media has changed how Generation Z perceives psychological issues. Many tend to perform self-diagnosis after exposure to psychology-related messages. This study aims to understand how Gen Z perceives mental health messages on social media and the meanings formed through this process. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with indepth interviews involving active social media users who have experienced selfdiagnosis. Data were analysed through the stages of perception (stimulus reception, organization, and interpretation) within digital health communication. The findings reveal that Gen Z’s perception is shaped by cognitive, emotional, and social factors. Mental health messages are interpreted not only as educational but also as emotional validation and self-reflection. However, social media also creates ambiguity, often leading to misinterpretation and self-diagnosis. Keywords: perception, Gen Z, mental health messages, social media, self-diagnose
