Abstract
A sorbitol factory from corn starch with enzymatic hydrolysis and catalytic hydrogenation process with a capacity of 50,000 tons/year will be established in the Pasuruan Industrial Estate Rembang (PIER) Area, Pasuruan, East Java. This sorbitol factory uses a semi-continuous operating system for 24 hours a day with 330 working days and 226 employees. The sorbitol factory uses corn starch as the main raw material supplied by PT. Daesang Ingredients Indonesia and hydrogen from PT. Samator Indo Gas. The resulting product is 70% sorbitol which can be used in various sectors such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The sorbitol production process consists of two main stages, namely enzymatic hydrolysis using α-amylase and glucoamylase enzymes to produce dextrose, and catalytic hydrogenation using raney nickel catalysts in a fixed bed multitube reactor to form sorbitol. The resulting product is then purified through filtration, carbon adsorption, and ion exchange, before finally being evaporated to a concentration of 70%.
