Abstract

Fly ash, a significant byproduct of coal combustion, is abundant and potentially hazardous to the environment. Rich in aluminosilicates with natural porosity, it can serve as a low-cost, eco-friendly adsorbent for treating industrial wastewater. Chemical activation using HCl enhances the adsorption capacity by dissolving impurities, widening the pore volume, and increasing the surface area, while also elevating the silica content and reducing the aluminium content. This study optimises activation time and HCl concentration to achieve maximum adsorption performance. The activated fly ash showed an iodine number of 778.38 mg/g, exceeding the SNI standard (750 mg/g), indicating high adsorption potential. XRF analysis revealed 78.1% SiO₂ and 3.96% Fe₂O₃, while BET analysis showed a surface area of 36.465 m²/g under 8 M HCl and 150 min activation. Optimisation using RSM–CCD yielded 744.13 mg/g, confirming good model validity. The high iodine value indicates that HCl-activated fly ash is a promising, low-cost adsorbent for removing metal ions in wastewater treatment. Keywords: Coal fly ash, acid leaching, iodine number, BET surface area, adsorption capacity, RSM-CCD
