Abstract
The Acetic Anhydride Plant from Acetone and Acetic Acid using the Ketene Process is designed with a production capacity of 16,000 tons per year, located in Grogol, Sukoharjo, Central Java. Acetic anhydride ((CH₃CO)₂O) with a concentration of 99.5% is widely used in industries such as cellulose acetate, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and rubber processing, as well as in acetylation reactions. The production process involves the pyrolysis of acetone at high temperature to form ketene, which then reacts with acetic acid in a bubble reactor to produce acetic anhydride. Main equipment includes a vaporizer, furnace, bubble reactor, and distillation column. By-products such as methane, ethylene, and carbon monoxide are utilized as furnace fuel, while unreacted acetone is recycled to improve process efficiency. The economic evaluation shows a Fixed Capital Investment of Rp 644,985,878,890 and a Total Capital Investment of Rp 922,475,063,107. The project achieves an ROI before tax of 20.64%, an IRR of 11.4%, a Payback Period of 4 years and 2 months, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 30%. These results indicate that the plant design is technically and economically feasible to meet industrial demand for acetic anhydride in Indonesia.
