Abstract
This study presents the preliminary design of a phenylacetic acid plant using benzyl cyanide, sulfuric acid, and water through a hydrolysis process. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year and will be located in Serpong, South Tangerang. The process involves the reaction of benzyl cyanide with sulfuric acid and water at 100°C and 1 atm to produce phenylacetic acid with a 95% conversion, accompanied by ammonium sulfate as a by-product. Purification is carried out using filtration, decantation, and distillation until 99% product purity is achieved. The plant operates continuously for 330 days per year with 200 employees. Economic analysis shows that the total capital investment is Rp 1,067,746,788,476, with a payback period of 4 years and 3 months, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 31.68%, and a break-even point (BEP) of 36.81%. These results indicate that the plant is technically and economically feasible to be established in Indonesia.
