Abstract

Mononitrotoluene belongs to the class of aromatic organic compounds and possesses three positional isomers. This compound has the chemical formula C₇H₇NO₂ and appears as a yellow, odorless liquid. It exhibits low solubility in water due to its non-polar character. Mononitrotoluene is widely utilized across various industrial sectors, including as an antioxidant additive, a component in paint formulations, a precursor in fragrance production, and an intermediate in agricultural chemical synthesis, among other applications. The growing demand for mononitrotoluene in Indonesia reflects its expanding industrial significance. Nevertheless, domestic production remains absent, resulting in continued reliance on imports while export activities have yet to be developed. Establishing a mononitrotoluene manufacturing facility within Indonesia is therefore expected to support national industrial needs and contribute to foreign-exchange earnings. Mononitrotoluene can be synthesized through three principal methods, namely batch nitration of toluene with mixed acid and continuous nitration of toluene with mixed acid. In this preliminary plant design, the continuous mixed-acid nitration process is selected. This choice is justified by several advantages associated with continuous operation, including higher product yield, lower production costs, reduced labor requirements, improved operational safety, and shorter reaction times. Collectively, these benefits enhance process efficiency and economic feasibility.
