Abstract
A 35,000-ton-per-year Nitrous Oxide plant will be established in Cikampek, West Java. It will operate 24 hours a day, 330 days a year. The Nitrous Oxide plant uses ammonium nitrate as its raw material, sourced from PT. Multi Nitrotama Kimia. Nitrous Oxide can be used as a general anesthetic gas for medical purposes and as an ingredient in whipped cream, which foams it. Nitrous Oxide can be produced through several processes, including oxidation and decomposition. This plant utilizes the decomposition process, using ammonium nitrate as its raw material. The solid ammonium nitrate is converted to a liquid by melting, aided by the addition of 8% water and heating to 130°C. The molten ammonium nitrate is then flowed to the decomposition reactor to be heated until it reaches its decomposition temperature of 240℃, the molten ammonium nitrate will change phase to gas at a temperature of 210℃ because it has reached its boiling point. Then at the decomposition temperature, the ammonium nitrate will decompose into nitrous oxide and water, there is a side reaction that produces ammonia gas and nitric acid. The output product from the reactor will be fed to a flash drum separator to be separated from water and nitric acid. Nitrous oxide gas, ammonia and some water that is still included Together with the gas will be fed into the absorber for the process of binding ammonia gas with water solvent. Nitrous oxide gas is fed into the adsorber for drying or reducing the water content still contained in the product. The pure nitrous oxide gas is liquefied to be stored in the liquid phase in the storage tank.
