Abstract

This internship program was conducted at PT Petrokimia Gresik, specifically in the Production Department IA, from September 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. The purpose of this internship was to understand the production processes of fertilizers and chemical products, as well as to observe the application of chemical engineering principles in large-scale industrial operations. Production Department IA is responsible for the manufacturing of ammonia, urea, and ZA fertilizer, which are among the main products of PT Petrokimia Gresik. The ammonia production process utilizes technology from The M.W. Kellogg Company with natural gas, steam, and air as feedstocks, while urea is produced through the reaction between ammonia and carbon dioxide. In addition to understanding production flow, the internship activities also covered the utility units, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) system, and laboratory activities related to the testing of raw materials and final products. The special project topic focused on “The Effect of Ammonia (NH₃) Outlet Concentration in the Stripper on Deposit Formation in the Concentration Area”, which aimed to analyze the correlation between ammonia content at the stripper outlet and the potential formation of deposits that could reduce process efficiency. The results indicate that comprehensive knowledge of process operations and quality control in the Production Department IA is crucial for maintaining operational stability and product quality. Moreover, the implementation of the OHS system and laboratory monitoring plays an essential role in ensuring the safety and sustainability of production activities at PT Petrokimia Gresik.
