Abstract
In the current era of rapid social media development, visual-based platforms such as Instagram function not only as spaces for entertainment but also as arenas that shape social constructions. One example is “campus beauty” accounts, which remain popular for their posts featuring students considered attractive. This study aims to analyze the reception of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran (UPNV) students toward the objectification of women on Instagram accounts @upnveteran.cakep and @upn.kece, as well as to explain how these accounts construct beauty standards while simultaneously objectifying the students whose photos are uploaded. The research focuses on issues of visual validation, beauty standards, the objectification of women, and the tendency toward self-objectification among students. The study employs Stuart Hall’s (1973) reception analysis, which emphasizes how media messages are produced and differently interpreted by audiences. Within this approach, audiences are divided into three reception positions: hegemonic-dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 informants selected according to predetermined criteria. The findings show diverse receptions among UPNV students toward the accounts. Most of them fall into the negotiated position, acknowledging that the accounts serve as entertainment and enjoyable spaces for visual validation, while also recognizing the negative impacts they bring. For some informants, these impacts influence their perceptions of body image and lead to increased self-surveillance of their appearance. This demonstrates that objectification practices are indirectly normalized and internalized, whether consciously or unconsciously. Overall, the study affirms that social media functions not only as a medium of expression but also as a site where meanings are continuously negotiated. Audiences actively reinterpret media messages according to their personal experiences and awareness related to the objectification of women.
