Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has given rise to the phenomenon of virtual idols or virtual influencers who act like real humans on social media. One example is the Instagram account @lentaripagi with the character Lentari van Lorainne (Riri) as “The 1st Virtual idol from Indonesia”. This study was conducted to understand how femininity is constructed through visual content, narratives, and interactions on the account, as well as how audiences respond to these representations. This study refers to Rodney H. Jones' (2021) theory, which focuses on four main elements, namely text, context, action/interaction, and ideology and power. Through this theory, the study attempts to reveal how visual content, captions, and audience comments shape representations of femininity, as well as how these messages are constructed and interpreted in social media culture. Research data was collected through documentation of Instagram content, including images, captions, hashtags, and comments, and supplemented with a literature review related to virtual influencers and gender representation. The results of the study show that femininity on the @lentaripagi account is constructed through visual aesthetics, urban lifestyle, and consistent personal narratives. Riri is portrayed as a young, beautiful, fashionable, and active woman in line with dominant beauty standards. Audience responses, especially from men, tend to highlight Riri's physical appearance, reinforcing the male gaze and patriarchal ideology in digital culture. Keywords: Virtual idol, Femininity, Digital Discourse Analysis, Instagram
