Abstract

Calcium chloride is a compound with a very wide range of uses in the chemical industry. This compound is used as an accelerator to speed up the hardening of cement in the cement industry, a color-fixing agent that enhances the ability of fibers to absorb dye in the textile industry, and a substance that improves paper quality by increasing its strength and stability. Due to the numerous uses of this compound, the demand for calcium chloride will continue to increase in the future, making the opportunity to establish a calcium chloride plant in Indonesia quite significant. The calcium chloride plant is planned to be built in 2029 with a capacity of 70,000 tons per year in the JIIPE area, Gresik. The plant will operate for 330 days a year with a workforce of 195 employees. Calcium chloride is produced through an acidification process, which begins with the dilution of 32% HCl to 30%. This is then reacted with CaCO3 and 30% HCl in reactor-1. The product from reactor-1 is fed into reactor-2 to be reacted with a 20% Ca(OH)2 solution, with the purpose of removing residual acid. Subsequently, the product from reactor-2 is fed to an RVF (Rotary Vacuum Filter) to separate the cake from the filtrate. The filtrate is then fed into an evaporator to vaporize the water, yielding a concentrated 60% CaCl2 solution. After that, the product from the evaporator is crystallized with a crystallizer and the crystals are separated from the mother liquor in a centrifuge. The CaCl2.2H2O crystals are then dried with a rotary dryer and their size is standardized with a ball mill to 100 mesh. The final CaCl2.2H2O product, with a concentration of over 99%, is stored in a product silo.
