Abstract

The preliminary design of an aluminum sulfate plant from kaolin and sulfuric acid using the Dorr process with a production capacity of 55,000 tons per year is proposed. Aluminum sulfate is an important chemical widely applied in the water treatment industry, paper manufacturing, and various industrial processes. The raw material used is kaolin, which reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce aluminum sulfate solution. The process involves digestion, purification, concentration, and crystallization, followed by drying and packaging of the final product. In this design, the Dorr process is selected due to its efficiency in handling solid–liquid separation and high product purity. The plant is planned to operate continuously with an annual operating time of 330 days. Technical calculations include material and energy balances, equipment sizing, and utility requirements. The economic evaluation shows that the plant is feasible to be established with an expected competitive production cost. This design aims to contribute to the fulfillment of domestic demand and reduce dependence on imported aluminum sulfate.
