Abstract
A diethyl carbonate (C5H10O3) plant based on carbon dioxide (CO2), propylene oxide (C3H6O), and ethanol (C2H5OH) with a single-stage synthesis process with a capacity of 70,000 tons/year is planned to be established in the JIIPE Industrial Estate, Gresik Regency, East Java. This diethyl carbonate plant operates 24 hours a day, with a 330-day working day and employs 168 employees. The plant uses 99.9% CO2 gas as raw material from PT Samator Indo Gas Tbk in Gresik City, 100% propylene oxide imported from Shell Chemicals in Singapore, 99.5% ethanol from PT Energi Agro Nusantara in Mojokerto City, and a calcium silicate catalyst from PT Niraku Jaya Abadi in Surabaya. The main product is diethyl carbonate with a purity of 99.1%, and the resulting by-product is propylene glycol. Diethyl carbonate has many uses in the industrial sector, including as a raw material for the formation of polycarbonate compounds, a good solvent in the pharmaceutical industry, the textile printing and painting industry (cellulose ether, natural and synthetic resins), the synthetic fiber industry (for polyamide, polyacrylonitrile and diphenol resin compounds), an electrolyte in batteries, and a paint remover. However, in this Pre-Design the focus of diethyl carbonate's use is as an additive for gasoline.
