Abstract
Waste water from the fish processing industry contains high levels of suspended solids, namely 214 mg/L, which requires efficient treatment technology to meet environmental quality standards. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of combining mechanical coagulation and flocculation processes using a Hydrocyclone to reduce Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and turbidity in fish processing wastewater. In this study, the chemical coagulant Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) was used in the coagulation process, followed by flocculation using a Hydrocyclone. The Hydrocyclone utilizes centrifugal force to aggregate flocs and separate solids from the water. The variables tested include variations in Hydrocyclone diameter (15 cm and 20 cm), flow rate (3, 4, and 5 L/min), and PAC coagulant dosage (20, 40, 60, and 80 mL). The results showed that a Hydrocyclone diameter of 15 cm, a flow rate of 5 L/min, and a PAC dosage of 80 mL yielded the highest removal efficiency, with TSS at 70% and turbidity at 80%. This study demonstrates that the combination of mechanical coagulation and Hydrocyclone flocculation can serve as an effective and efficient solution for the treatment of industrial fish processing wastewater, while also being environmentally friendly and scalable for industrial applications.
