Abstract

The treatment of laundry wastewater containing organic matter and detergent presents a significant environmental challenge. One environmentally friendly alternative is the use of a free floating wetland (FFW) system that utilizes aquatic plants and microorganisms. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and salvinia (Salvinia molesta), as well as the addition of 5% EM4 (Effective Microorganisms), in reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and surfactan levels, and in increasing Dissolved Oxygen (DO) in laundry wastewater. The experimental design involved FFW treatments with and without EM4 addition over a 5-day retention time, divided into anoxic (day 0–2) and oxic (day 3–5) phases. The system's effectiveness increased with longer retention time, with day 5 identified as the optimal point for microbial and plant activity in degrading organic pollutants. The combination of Salvinia molesta and 5% EM4 demonstrated the highest performance, achieving a COD reduction of 80.9%, surfactan reduction of 65%, and DO increase to 5.02 mg/L. This effectiveness is supported by the complex root system of Salvinia molesta, which enhances oxygenation in the rhizosphere and supports the growth of aerobic microorganisms. Therefore, an FFW system integrating floating aquatic plants and EM4 presents an effective and sustainable solution for the treatment of domestic wastewater such as laundry effluent.
