Abstract
In the past decade, the number of elderly residents in Surabaya has continued to increase significantly, reaching approximately 11.6% of the total population in 2023. However, this growth has not been accompanied by adequate facilities to support their well-being. The strong cultural tradition of caring for the elderly in Indonesia also faces challenges, as social changes and modern lifestyles have reduced the time and attention devoted to them. Nursing homes, while serving as one possible solution, are often associated with negative stigma within society. An elderly activity center represents a building concept that enables older adults to age within a familiar environment through the approaches of “ageing in place” and “active ageing.” This center aims to enhance the physical and psychological well-being of the elderly by providing diverse activities that encourage social participation and personal development. Furthermore, cross-generational interaction, which has been proven to positively affect the physical and mental health of the elderly, can serve as a vital aspect of the facility’s design. To achieve this, the application of biophilic architecture—which strengthens human connections with nature—is expected to reduce stress and improve the quality of life for older adults. Accordingly, the Surabaya Cross-Generation Activity Center for Elderly offers an effective solution to enhance elderly well-being in Surabaya by integrating social activities, intergenerational interactions, and architectural approaches that promote both physical and mental health.
