Abstract
Bawean Island, located in the Java Sea, holds great potential as a leading tourist destination with its natural beauty, rich local culture, and endemic species such as the Bawean deer. However, the development of the tourism sector on this island is still hindered by limited supporting facilities, particularly the lack of adequate accommodation. Data shows that the number of lodgings on Bawean Island has remained stagnant since 2021, with only 16 hotels/guesthouses available, none of which are star-rated facilities. Along with the significant growth in tourist arrivals, which increased by 123.77% in 2023, the need for quality accommodation facilities has become urgent. Visitors often face difficulties finding comfortable lodging, which affects their overall holiday experience on Bawean Island. As a solution, the design of a resort with a vernacular architecture approach is proposed to meet this need. The resort is designed to integrate Bawean’s local architectural principles, such as the use of natural materials and building designs that reflect the local culture. This approach not only provides an authentic experience for visitors but also supports cultural and environmental preservation. The design method involves the analysis of primary data through field observation as well as secondary data from literature studies. The resort is planned as a four-star accommodation facility with a capacity of up to 150 guests, offering a holistic holiday experience by combining elements of local culture and sustainability. With the implementation of this approach, Bawean Island is expected to strengthen its position as a competitive sustainable tourist destination, enhance its tourism appeal, and support local economic growth. The resort also represents a strategic step in optimizing Bawean Island’s tourism potential, while simultaneously introducing its cultural and architectural heritage to national and international audiences.
