Abstract

Controversies surrounding marketing campaigns often spark debate, especially when visual elements in a product or advertisement are linked to geopolitical issues. This study analyzes the representation of the Palestine-Israel war in the ZARA Atelier Collection 04 catalog photos, which drew public attention due to their perceived visual similarities to the war in Palestine. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a semiotic approach to analyze the representation contained in the ZARA Atelier catalog photos. The results of the study based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis show that: Sinsign, qualisign, and legisign are three other sign categories. Sinsign is a photo of six jackets from the fourth collection of ZARA Atelier: poetess, rebel, timeless, beyond, embraced, and siren. Qualisign is a property in A Studio Sculptor that aims to promote clothing crafts in an artistic context. Legisign is a setting that uses properties that resemble a statue of a missing body. Models pose in a dusty studio, with wooden crates visibly soiled by the surrounding white concrete debris. This creates the impression of a war disaster. The mannequin icon, wrapped in white cloth, resembles a corpse. Other icons include mannequins with severed arms or incomplete anatomy, with sad, pained, and helpless facial expressions reminiscent of corpses and war victims in Gaza. All of these can be interpreted as representations of the Palestine-Israel war in the ZARA Atelier Collection 04 catalog photos.
