Abstract
The conversion of agricultural land is one of the major issues currently faced by the agricultural sector in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the conversion of agricultural land in Candi District, Sidoarjo Regency, which is a peri-urban area experiencing intense development pressure and high population growth. The main objectives of this research are: (1) to examine the trend of agricultural land conversion in Candi District, (2) to analyze the factors influencing agricultural land conversion in the area, and (3) to identify the socio-economic impacts on farmers whose agricultural land has been converted to non-agricultural uses. This study employs a quantitative method with a survey approach involving 30 farmer respondents. Respondents were selected using snowball sampling from four villages, with the criterion being farmers who had sold their rice fields. Data were analyzed using exponential trend analysis, multiple linear regression, and descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that agricultural land conversion in Candi District has occurred significantly, with a continual decline in rice field area over the years. The factors found to have a significant influence on land conversion include farmers’ education level, farming capital, farming income, and urgent financial needs. Meanwhile, variables such as farmers’ age, inheritance system, and number of dependents were not found to have a significant impact. The socioeconomic impacts experienced by farmers include reduced income from the agricultural sector and a shift in occupation toward informal sectors.
