Abstract
The development of social media has revolutionized the way individuals build popularity, no longer through mainstream media institutions, but through algorithmic logic and user participation. This study examines the construction of popularity on social media, specifically through an analysis of the SOFAREMIX 2024 video uploaded by the TikTok account @sofarsabi. This video garnered public attention as it was considered more representative than the TikTok Replay videos from the @replayindonesia account, which previously regularly summarized popular trends at the end of each year. This study employs Rodney H. Jones' digital discourse analysis approach, which divides the analysis into four elements: text, context, action and interaction, and power and ideology. The analysis reveals that popularity on TikTok is shaped by a combination of algorithmic systems, user participation, and creators' personal branding strategies. A key finding of this research is that most popular content originates from user-generated content (UGC), and popularity is more influenced by audience participation, such as reposts, stitches, and parodies. Additionally, TikTok actively shapes popular narratives through its FYP feature, which rapidly and widely disseminates content. The SOFAREMIX 2024 video also demonstrates how social media has become a space for distributing discourse that brings together figures from mainstream media and microcelebrities within a single digital landscape. Thus, this study confirms that popularity on TikTok does not arise naturally but is the result of the interplay between digital media power, algorithms, and user social actions.
