Abstract

The electroplating industry is one of the industrial sectors that produces liquid waste with hazardous heavy metal content, one of which is hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺). This compound is toxic, carcinogenic, and can pollute the environment if not handled properly. This study aims to analyze the effect of RIPT-TiO₂ and RIPT-ZnO as well as mass variation and sampling time on the removal of Cr⁶⁺ using a fixed bed photocatalytic reactor with 15 watts of UV-C light. The method used includes immobilization of TiO₂ and ZnO on Dowex cation resin with variations in resin mass and sampling time. The main parameter analyzed was the concentration of Cr⁶⁺ which was tested before and after the treatment process using a fixed bed photocatalytic reactor. The results showed that the most optimal Cr⁶⁺ removal occurred at a mass of 50 grams and a sampling time of 180 minutes, with a removal percentage of 71.36% in the RIPT-ZnO treatment, 70.67% in RIPT-TiO₂, and 67.66% in the resin (control). Under the same conditions, the percentage of turbidity removal reached 97.17% in the RIPT-ZnO treatment, 92.40% in the RIPT-TiO₂, and 43.84% in the resin (control). The difference in effectiveness is influenced by the characteristics of the photocatalyst, where ZnO has a wider UV absorption ability, a larger bandgap value of 3.37 eV, and better stability than TiO₂. The use of a fixed bed photocatalytic reactor is effective in reducing the concentration of Cr⁶⁺ from electroplating industry wastewater and can be an alternative waste treatment.
