Abstract
An ethyl acetate production plant with a capacity of 60.000 tons per year has been designed utilizing the esterification of ethyl alcohol and acetic acid, employing a heterogeneous catalyst, Amberlite IRC-120 H⁺. This method was selected due to its high conversion efficiency (96%), favorable operating conditions (110°C, 1 atm), and cost-effective operation. The process flow is divided into three key stages: pre-treatment, reaction and separation, and final purification, ultimately producing ethyl acetate with a purity level of 99.9%. The plant requires approximately 3.966 kg/h of ethyl alcohol and 5.278 kg/h of acetic acid as its primary raw materials. It is planned to operate continuously for 330 days annually, situated on a 29.925 m² site, and supported by a workforce of 155 personnel. From an economic perspective, the project demonstrates strong viability, with a fixed capital investment of IDR 580 billion, generating annual sales of IDR 6.51 trillion, and incurring raw material costs of IDR 4.13 trillion per year. The economic indicators include a post-tax ROI of 37.09%, an IRR of 23.30%, a payback period of 2 years, and a break-even point (BEP) at 40.34% of production capacity. The development of this plant is expected to significantly reduce reliance on imported ethyl acetate, fulfill domestic industrial demand, and strengthen the self-sufficiency and growth of Indonesia’s chemical manufacturing sector.
