Abstract
The rise of modern lifestyles has increased awareness among young men about personal grooming has led to a shift in how masculinity is perceived, specifically among Generation Z. TikTok has played a key role in spreading messages about inclusive masculinity. One account named @glowupwithfalih, regularly shared educational content about skincare, stimulating to normalize self-care practices for male users. However, self-care among men has pros and cons. Some view it as a healthy and inclusive form of modern masculinity, while others see it as straying from traditional masculine norms. This study aims to explore how Generation Z males respond to skincare education on TikTok, using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis. The study used a qualitative descriptive method under a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight male participants from Generation Z. The results showed that all participants held a negotiated view; they accepted certain ideas about male self-care but adapted them to align with traditional masculine principles. Some participants embraced selfcare as a way to express their identity and adopted a dominant-hegemonic position. Others resisted these practices, fearing they might weaken traditional masculinity, reflecting an oppositional stance. The way individuals interpreted skincare and masculinity was shaped by their social circles, personal experiences, and cultural norms. In conclusion, Generation Z demonstrates a flexible and selective understanding of masculinity, shaped by both social norms and tradition.
