Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of social injustice in the lyrics of the album Sanctuary by the Surabaya-based hardcore band FRAUD. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic method. This approach is chosen because it enables the researcher to uncover hidden meanings embedded in the song lyrics. The concept of the relationship between signifier and signified is used to interpret symbolic meanings within the words and phrases, while syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations help explain how word structure and selection shape complex ideological meanings. Four songs are analyzed in depth “Live with The Pain”, “Kultur Dogmatis”, “Kontra Martir”, and “The Prophecy”. The findings reveal that FRAUD represents four forms of social injustice structural oppression, reflected in the exploitation of people by power system, ideological repression, through inherited dogmas that limit critical thinkin, media domination and propaganda, used to shape public opinion manipulatively, and resistance against corrupt power, as a form of critical awareness. These findings reinforce the idea that song lyrics can serve as powerful social communication tools for voicing inequality and inspiring resistance against oppressive structures. Keywords: Semiotics, song lyrics, social injustice, FRAUD, hardcore music.
