Abstract
The efficiency of shallot farming is influenced by the management of production inputs and non-inputs. One of the main challenges in red onion production is the increase in input prices, such as seeds, fertilizers, labour, and pesticides, which affects production costs and harvest yields. In addition to input factors, non-input factors such as the ability to manage farming, influenced by the socio-economic behavior of farmers, also play an important role. Thus, fluctuations in productivity and rising input prices are empirical issues that affect production outcomes. The objective of the research is to analyse the influence of production factors (land, labor, seeds, organic fertilizer, SP36, KCL, NPK, herbicides, and insecticides) on the production of red onions, measure technical, allocative, and economic efficiency in the use of production inputs, and identify farmers' economic behaviour based on classical, neo-classical, and modern economic theories. The research method uses a survey approach with purposive location selection, and a sample of 40 respondents was chosen through proportional random sampling. Technical efficiency analysis uses Stochastic Production Frontiers, allocative efficiency is calculated by comparing the marginal product value with input prices, and economic efficiency is obtained by multiplying technical and allocative efficiency. The economic behaviour of farmers was analysed using the Spradley method. The research results show that technical efficiency is achieved in the production factors of land area, labour, seeds, organic fertilizers, SP36, NPK, and insecticides. However, allocative efficiency has not yet been achieved in several factors such as land area, labour, NPK fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides. Economically, the red onion farming in the research location is not yet efficient. The economic behaviour of farmers is not entirely rational according to classical theory, but more in line with modern economic thinking influenced by information limitations, experience, social norms, and cognitive biases. The research conclusion shows that farmers have not yet achieved economic efficiency and optimal use of production inputs. Keywords: efficiency, stochastic production frontiers, shallot farming, farmers economic behavior, economic thought theory.
