Abstract

The Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenaon is an environmental issue arising from rapid urbanization and physical development, particularly in urban areas. Sidoarjo Regency, as part of the Gerbangkertosusila metropolitan area, has experienced a significant increase in air temperature due to land conversion from green areas to built-up zones. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of UHI, assess the condition of Green Open Spaces (GOS), and formulate mitigation strategies for UHI in Sidoarjo. A quantitative approach using remote sensing methods was applied, utilizing Landsat-8 satellite imagery to obtain Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The mapping results indicate that areas with high development intensity show greater UHI values, especially in densely populated and economically active zones. The annual decline in GOS area has been identified as a major contributor to rising temperatures. Therefore, the proposed strategy focuses on identifying priority areas for GOS development based on zones with high UHI intensity. These findings are expected to support sustainable spatial planning and climate change mitigation efforts in Sidoarjo Regency.
