Abstract
Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that remains widely misunderstood by the public, especially among adolescents. Stigma and discrimination toward individuals with schizophrenia are still prevalent, leading to their social exclusion and lack of proper care. In this context, educational media such as short films hold great potential for delivering information effectively to teenagers. Therefore, this short film project aims to enhance adolescent understanding of schizophrenia through strong visual and emotional approaches, utilizing the expressionist art style to depict the psychological condition of individuals with schizophrenia more deeply. This project employs both qualitative and quantitative descriptive methodologies. Data collection was carried out through interviews with psychiatrists and target audiences, along with the distribution of questionnaires to assess adolescents' knowledge and interest in schizophrenia and short films as an educational medium. In addition, literature reviews and existing studies supported the design process. The production stages included pre-production, production, and post-production, with attention given to visual composition and voice-over techniques tailored to the characteristics of the intended audience. The analysis shows that using dual perspectives from the patient and the surrounding community and applying expressionist visual elements enhances the delivery of the film’s message and fosters audience empathy. The short film, with a 20-minute duration, is intended for distribution via social media platforms such as YouTube and the Indonesian Schizophrenia Community Group, aligning with teenagers' media consumption habits. The visual concept is based on the subjective experience of individuals with schizophrenia, using color tones, composition, and visual effects that reflect their inner emotions. This short film is expected to serve as an effective educational medium to raise adolescent awareness of schizophrenia. Through an emotionally engaging visual approach, the film not only aims to inform but also to reduce stigma and build empathy among teenagers.
