Abstract
The Japanese occupation of Tarakan is one of the important historical events in Indonesia that needs to be introduced to the younger generation as part of the nation’s historical education. The level of knowledge among elementary school children aged 9–10 years regarding the Japanese occupation, especially the events in Tarakan, is still relatively low. This shows that their understanding of historical aspects is still lacking and needs to be improved. The lack of information media, especially books as a learning tool, can be one of the causes of the limited knowledge of 9–10-year-old children about the Japanese occupation in Tarakan. Therefore, this study aims to design an illustrated book that presents the story of the Japanese occupation in Tarakan in a simple, engaging, and educational manner for children of that age group. The research methods used include literature study, interviews with the Tarakan Department of Culture, and the Tarakan Historical Community. The process of designing this illustrated book involves determining the story theme, creating a storyboard, selecting the visual style, and creating illustrations that match the characteristics of children aged 9–10 years. The result of this design is an illustrated book with light narration and colorful illustrations, featuring a child character visiting the Tarakan World War II History Museum, which presents Tarakan’s history sequentially—from the introduction to Tarakan, its natural resources potential, exploitation by the Dutch, the arrival of the Japanese, to Tarakan’s independence. This illustrated book is expected to serve as an alternative educational medium to support the understanding of local history, particularly the history of the Japanese occupation in Tarakan, for elementary school children aged 9–10 years. Thus, this illustrated book is expected to be an innovative solution to introducing local history to children in an enjoyable way. It is also hoped that this book can help foster reading interest and improve children’s understanding of historical events in their own region. Furthermore, the illustrated book can serve as an educational tool that supports character building by helping children understand the values of history and the nation’s struggles.
