Abstract

Food security has become one of the emergency issues faced by many countries, further exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic in recent years. In Indonesia, the food sector is one of the main contributors to the country’s inflation rate. Surabaya, as the second-largest city in Indonesia with a population of over three million people, faces significant challenges in ensuring food security. One key effort to strengthen food security is through food self-sufficiency. However, achieving food self-sufficiency in a large urban area like Surabaya is particularly difficult. Productive agricultural land in the city continues to shrink every year, and urban planning in Surabaya prioritizes industrial and service sectors over agriculture. Urban farming, or agriculture within urban areas, presents one of the most viable solutions to achieve food self-sufficiency. This is supported by findings from questionnaires, observations, and interviews, which indicate the potential of urban farming in Surabaya. However, public awareness of the importance of urban farming remains very low. Through this campaign design, it is expected that the interest and awareness of Surabaya’s residents towards urban farming will increase. The campaign aims to educate and encourage the public to be more engaged in addressing food security through sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Keywords: Urban farming, food security, campaign
