Abstract
Addressing ageism or age discrimination in mainstream media that often ignores older people, this study analyzes the critical discourse of elderly resistance in the film “Good Luck To You, Leo Grande”. This study aims to describe various forms of resistance against ageism portrayed by the main female elderly character in the film. Using Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis to analyze , this study examines how the film represents the elderly's resistance to ageism by dissecting the dimensions of discourse, including: text dimensions, social cognition, and social context. The analysis highlights how these dimensions play a role in dismantling the myths circulating about elderly sexuality and reveals the underlying ideology or idealism of the filmmaker Sophie Hyde. Based on the findings, the movie specifically explores the complexity of internalized ageism within the main character, Nancy Stokes. Elderly stereotypes such as quietness, conservativeness, decline in physical attractiveness, asexuality, and the role as a parental figure, become the foundation of Nancy's struggle against ageism in herself, especially regarding sexuality. The film explicitly counters various myths of elderly sexuality, especially in women, debunking the belief that sexual life stops post-menopause or belongs only to the young. Through exploring the protagonist's passions and openness, it debunks the stereotype of older people as asexual and promotes self-acceptance. The culmination of the protagonist's resistance and self-acceptance signifies freedom from internalized ageism, concluding that the film is a call to understand aging as a process of continuous growth, anchored in Sophie Hyde's ideas of a more inclusive narrative of aging and desire. Keywords: ageism, elderly sexuality, critical discourse analysis, film analysis
