Abstract

A heterogeneous CaO.BaO catalyst was developed using calcined blood clam shells as the CaO precursor and commercial BaO to enhance the efficiency of palm oil transesterification into biodiesel. BaO was incorporated due to its high basicity, which promotes catalytic activity. The catalyst was synthesized through a co-precipitation method, involving the reaction of CaCl2 (derived from calcined shells) and BaCl2 at varying molar ratios (1:0,2 to 1:1), followed by NaOH-induced precipitation, drying, and subsequent calcination. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD and SEM analyses. Biodiesel production was conducted in two stages: esterification using methanol and sulfuric acid to reduce free fatty acid content, followed by transesterification employing the CaO.BaO catalyst. The optimal catalyst composition at a CaCl2:BaCl2 molar ration of 1:1 and a loading of 2,5%wt resulted in a biodiesel yield of 98%, with 99,47% FAME content, a density of 860 kg/m^3, viscosity of 5,36 cSt, and a cetane number of 62,5-meeting the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Excessive catalyst dosage was found to cause saponification and hinder phase separation. These findings underscore the importance of precise catalyst formulation and processing for the efficient production of biodiesel from palm oil.
