Abstract
The advancement of technology has driven transformation in various aspects of human life, including the field of fitness and health, which has increasingly integrated with digital technology. Smartphone-based fitness applications have become a preferred technology that assists individuals in monitoring and managing their physical activities and health conditions in real-time. The global rise in awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle has also contributed to the rapid growth of fitness app usage across various segments of society. However, the acceptance of fitness applications still faces significant challenges, as evidenced by low user retention rates and numerous complaints reported by users regarding various functional and experiential aspects of the app. This thesis aims to evaluate user acceptance in adopting fitness applications. The research model is developed by adapting the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) framework, which is further extended by incorporating the variables of self-efficacy and personal innovativeness to provide a more comprehensive perspective. The research methodology adopts a quantitative approach, using a questionnaire involving 427 respondents who are users of fitness applications. The data collected is subsequently analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with a Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) approach to test the hypotheses formulated within the research framework. The findings reveal that three key variables performance expectancy, habit, and self-efficacy have a positive and significant effect on behavioral intention in the use of fitness applications. Effort expectancy significantly influences performance expectancy, while self-efficacy has a significant impact on effort expectancy. Personal innovativeness is also identified as having a significant effect on the formation of habit in using fitness applications. However, the variables of effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, and price value do not show a significant influence on behavioral intention, indicating that these factors may be less relevant in the acceptance of fitness applications within the population studied, namely in Surabaya.
