Abstract

Film, as a form of mass media, serves not only as a channel for ideas but also as a tool to reflect social and political realities. One notable example is the film "Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas" by Edwin, which delves into sensitive issues surrounding the dark history of Indonesia's New Order era. This study aims to uncover the representation of the authoritarian government during the New Order period in this film through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, which categorizes signs into denotative, connotative, and mythic meanings. The film is set in the late 1980s to early 1990s and incorporates distinctive elements such as formal language in dialogues, period-specific fashion styles, and references to significant events like the mysterious shootings (Petrus) and the solar eclipse of 1983. This research employs a qualitative approach within an interpretive paradigm. The data analysis technique follows the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data sources include documentation of screenshots from the film's scenes and literature studies. A total of 17 scenes were analyzed to identify signs reflecting the characteristics of an authoritarian government during the New Order era. The findings reveal that the film portrays authoritarianism through various aspects, including dominant state ideology, gender discrimination, centralized power, the use of thugs by the state, intrusion into private spaces, military violence, press restrictions, and language as a tool for social control. In conclusion, "Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas" film effectively reflects the characteristics of an authoritarian New Order government through its semiotic elements. This research contributes to media studies, particularly film analysis, by demonstrating how films can be understood not merely as entertainment but also as cultural products shaped by and shaping social and political structures. Keywords: film, semiotics, New Order, authoritarianism, qualitative analysis.
