Abstract

A Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) plant with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year will be established in Manyarejo, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java. The plant will operate 24 hours a day and 330 days a year. The MEK plant will use 2-butanol from Yujiang Chemical (Shandong) Co., Ltd in China and Copper Catalyst from PT. Hunan Minstrong Technology Co., Ltd in Hunan, China. Methyl ethyl ketone is an important solvent with properties similar to acetone. MEK has advantages over other solvents, including a comparable evaporation rate, high solubility ratio to viscosity, ability to mix with large amounts of hydrocarbons without affecting solid content or viscosity, and good volume/mass ratio due to its low density. In general, MEK is a competitor to ethyl acetate as a low-boiling-point solvent due to its low viscosity, high solid content, and large dilution tolerance. The MEK plant uses a dehydrogenation process with CuO catalyst. The process starts with pre-treatment by evaporating 2-butanol. The first step is dehydrogenation in a fixed-bed multitube reactor with CuO catalyst at 380°C. The gas produced is then separated from unwanted substances, such as nitrogen and water, using a flash drum. The next step is to separate the MEK and water components in a distillation column. The separated MEK gas is then condensed and cooled before entering the product tank. The planned MEK plant can be summarized as follows: 1. Production capacity: 50,000 tons/year 2.
