Abstract
The Kanjuruhan tragedy on October 1, 2022, was a heartbreaking event in the history of Indonesian football that had a wide-ranging impact on various parties, including the Bonek supporter group, loyal supporters of Persebaya Surabaya. Although Bonek were not present at the scene, their name was still dragged into negative public perception due to their association with the club that was playing at the time. This research aims to analyze the image of Bonek before and after the tragedy, as well as their efforts to improve that image through group communication strategies and image repair theory. (Image Repair Theory). The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, documentation, and social media analysis. The research results show that the image of Bonek before the tragedy was generally negative, associated with anarchic behavior and violence. Post-tragedy, Bonek undertook various image improvement efforts, such as fundraising for the victims, condolence activities, and the use of social media to convey positive and peaceful messages. This strategy of empathetic communication and social action is beginning to change public perception, where Bonek is starting to be seen as a more caring and responsible supporter community. This study concludes that efforts to improve Bonek's image have the potential to enhance the relationship between supporters and the community, as well as to support the creation of a more positive supporter culture in Indonesia.
