Abstract
This study analyzes communication apprehension (CA) experienced by undergraduate students during interactions with their supervisor during the thesis supervising process in Surabaya. The background of this research is the importance of effective interpersonal communication in thesis supervising to support timely completion of studies. This study aims to analyze how communication apprehension, including its causes and impacts, affects the process of completing students' theses. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a phenomenological approach, data was collected through in-depth interviews with students experiencing communication apprehension. The results showed that the symptoms of communication apprehension include physiological and psychological aspects. The types of anxiety experienced by students include Context-based Communication Apprehension (CA), Audience-based CA, and Situational CA. Factors influencing this communication apprehension include hierarchical status with lecturers, students’ perceptions of lecturers, previous communication experiences, and differences in perspective. The impact of communication apprehension includes avoidance of interaction, internal discomfort, and slowing down the completion of the thesis. In conclusion, communication apprehension experienced by students is a crucial issue that can hinder the effectiveness of thesis supervising and potentially prolong the completion of studies.
