Abstract

This study examines the reception of Surabaya students towards the boycott content of the Hewlett-Packard (HP) brand related to Israel on the Instagram account @gerakanbds, in the context of globalization and social media as a means of disseminating information on social and political issues, especially the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Using a qualitative approach and reception analysis according to Stuart Hall, this study involved in-depth interviews and content observation to explore students' views, attitudes, and reactions to the boycott. The results of this study are divided into several contexts, namely in the context of support for the boycott movement, the majority of informants showed a strong commitment to fighting for the rights of the Palestinian people, although there were some individuals who disagreed due to dependence on certain brands. This phenomenon is clearly seen in the use of Hewlett-Packard (HP) products, where two informants rejected the product because of the brand's association with Israel and believed that the boycott could influence Israeli policy, while one other informant had a negotiating attitude by continuing to use the HP product until it was damaged. The Instagram account @gerakanbds is recognized as an effective educational medium on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and the majority of informants agree that education about the boycott is important to raise awareness of humanitarian issues in Palestine. While the majority supported the movement, one informant emphasized the need to respect different views, reflecting a more open negotiation attitude. Overall, willingness to participate in the boycott movement increased, but many individuals also struggled between personal satisfaction from using the product and contributing to a larger social movement, demonstrating the complexity of societal attitudes toward this sensitive issue.
