Abstract

Dibutyl phthalate is a compound that has very broad uses in the chemical industry. This compound is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of polymers and plasticizers. So that makes the need for dibutyl phthalate even greater and important in the industrial world. The opportunity for the establishment of a dibutyl phthalate plant in Indonesia is quite large, so it is necessary to plan the design of a chemical plant with dibutyl phthalate products. This factory is planned to be established in 2027 with a capacity of 30,000 tons / year in the JIIPE (Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate) Industrial Estate in Sukomulyo Village, Manyar District, Gresik Regency. The factory operates for 330 days a year with a workforce of 195 employees. The manufacture of dibutyl phthalate uses an esterification process, where this process is carried out by reacting phthalic anhydride and n-butanol in a reactor with the help of a sulfuric acid catalyst. The reactor operates under conditions of 100℃ temperature and 1 atm pressure. The reaction in the reactor is reversible and endothermic. The yield produced is 90%. The product that has been separated from the catalyst in the Neutralizer is flowed to the decanter to separate the components based on their specific gravity. The top product from the decanter in the form of n-butanol, phtalic anhhdride, and dibutyl phthalate will flow to distillation tower I to separate n-Butanol from the mixture which will be taken as top product while the bottom product will flow to distillation tower II to purify the main product in the form of dibutyl phthalate >99%. Then the product is flowed to the product storage tank.
