Abstract
A sodium metasilicate plant, utilizing a baker process with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons, is to be constructed in the JIIPE Manyar region of Gresik, East Java. The plant operates continuously, 24 hours a day, 330 days a year, using silica sand and sodium carbonate as raw materials. Sodium metasilicate has a variety of applications, including as a metal adhesive, in pulp and paper production, as a detergent ingredient, and as an ingredient in other chemical industries. The sodium metasilicate plant process entails the reaction of silica sand and sodium carbonate in an electric furnace at a temperature of 1400°C. Following this, the mixture is cooled in a rotary cooler to a temperature of 150°C and dissolved in a solvent tank. Subsequently, impurities are removed in the settling tank. The solution was concentrated on the evaporator to achieve a concentration level of 70%. The solution was then conveyed to the spray dryer, which was heated to 375°C using hot air from the burner. The solution is contacted in the opposite direction, where hot air is introduced from below (in a countercurrent flow) to facilitate the formation of sodium metasilicate granules (powder). The sodium metasilicate powder, which emerges from the spray dryer at a temperature of 120°C, is conveyed to the cooling system to reduce the temperature to 30°C. The product is then cooled to 30°C. It is stored in a sodium metasilicate.
