Abstract

An N-Phenylacetamide factory from Aniline and Acetic Acid with a Crystallization Process with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes/year will be established in the Bukit Semarang Baru industrial area on Jalan Semarang Boja, Semarang City, Central Java. This factory operates 24 hours a day, 330 days a year. The raw materials used are Aniline and Acetic Acid. N-Phenylacetamide is the most important raw material in several chemical industries, as an ingredient in the pharmaceutical industry and as an auxiliary ingredient in the manufacture of paint and rubber. The raw materials for N-phenylacetamide are acetic acid and aniline with a liquid phase. Before entering the reactor, acetic acid and aniline are respectively flowed through a centrifugal pump to increase the pressure to 2.5 atm according to the operating conditions for the formation of N-phenylacetamide and heated in a heater. The reactor operates at a temperature of 120oC and a pressure of 2.5 atm (to maintain the liquid phase) and lasts for 6 hours. The reactor output product is flowed to the pan evaporator to obtain a better concentration of N-phenylacetamide by evaporating the remaining reactants and reducing the water content of the N-phenylacetamide. The pan evaporator output is a saturated solution with a concentration of 93%. The resulting saturated solution will flow to the Swanson Walker crystallizer. The formation of N-phenylacetamide crystal grains occurs at a minimum temperature of 60oC, which is the lowest temperature for the formation of N-phenylacetamide crystals. The mother liquor and the N-phenylacetamide crystals formed are flowed to a centrifuge to separate the solid and mother liquor parts. The water content in the N-phenylacetamide crystal product is still quite high, around 0.015%. The water content must be reduced with the help of a rotary drum dryer. Next, the product flows to the cooling screw conveyor to reduce the product heat to 30oC. After passing through the cooling screw conveyor, the product will be reduced and uniform in size to 100 mesh using a ball mill. Oversized products will remain in the Ball Mill and be reprocessed by the ball mill. Meanwhile, the N-phenylacetamide crystal product that has the appropriate size will be stored in a silo.
