Abstract

The Olympics is one of the biggest sporting events in the world which is participated in by all countries in the world. In 2013, Japan followed suit bidding to host the 2020 Olympics, at that time competing with the city of Doha in Turkey and the city of Madrid in Spain. From these results, Japan officially became the host of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. As host of the Olympics, Japan took advantage of this to achieve its national interests by carrying out public diplomacy efforts. From the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, Japan can improve its country due to the tsunami that occurred in Japan in 2011 and can also increase Japan's existence as a developed country in Asia. The research uses international relations theory, namely public diplomacy from Nicholas J. Cull, which will be written descriptively and using qualitative research methods. From the use of the theories and research methods above, we will be able to explain Japan's public diplomacy efforts through holding the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
