Abstract

History is an important thing that must be continuously maintained and the truth of its story transformed from generation to generation. With the shift and rise of digital technology, now all people can access and share an information about history easily. The discussion regarding the May 1998 rape tragedy is one example that social media has a big role in transferring historical information. Even so, the doubts and disbelief from users found in replies to an education thread about the May 1998 rape, uploaded by the X account @neohistoria_id, raises concerns about the audience's knowledge of the tragedy and how they perceive the message in that thread, including generation Z. This research was conducted in order to see how generation z perceives information towards the thread of May 1998 rape education thread uploaded by the X account @neohistoria_id using Stuart Hall's Encoding-Decoding method. Generation Z in this research will map its acceptance into three positions, namely dominant hegemonic, negotiated position, and oppositional position. The results found that most of Generation Z were in a negotiating position.
