Abstract

Women are often considered as companions who only fulfill the needs of men, and are often seen as figures who do not have physical strength, are weak, and tend to be emotional. Over time, more and more women are starting to develop their thinking and want gender equality, even more than men. In 2023, the Barbie Live Action film appeared with the characters Barbie and Ken which ultimately gave rise to stereotypes that were formed because of the depiction of the characters in the film. Stereotypes will continue to develop as time changes and continue to remain as standards of beauty for both men and women. This raises a problem formulation, namely how the audience accepts the Barbie stereotype in the Barbie film (2023). The purpose of this study was to determine the reception of the Barbie audience (2023) to the stereotypes that are attached to the characters Barbie and Ken in the Barbie film (2023) using Stuart Hall's reception analysis. The results showed that each informant had a different view in understanding this which was influenced by their parenting style, education, and personal experiences. There were 5 informants in the dominant hegemonic position, 1 informant in the negotiated position, and 2 informants in the oppositional position.
