Abstract

In this era of globalization, information is a necessity for everyone. Libraries play an important role as information centers that provide access to a variety of needs to increase knowledge, explore new ideas, and explore various topics. Libraries also encourage literacy, lifelong learning and scientific research, and play an important role in disseminating information, thus improving the quality of human resources. However, Indonesia has a low literacy rate where based on the World's Most Literate Nations Ranked, Indonesia is ranked 60th out of 61 countries, while according to the International survey, Indonesia is ranked 62nd out of 70 countries. The cause of Indonesia's low interest in reading according to the Ministry of Education and Culture data is due to the lack of library facilities. Gresik City, which is known as an industrial city, has great potential to become the location of a special economic zone, so that to advance the development of Gresik city, it needs special attention to educational facilities that can improve the quality of human resources. One of the educational facilities needed is a library that is able to accommodate today's literacy needs. To meet the needs of literacy development, a public smart library is needed which is equipped with advanced technology and relevant collections. In addition, the condition of Gresik city which has a tropical climate that tends to be hot also needs to be considered to achieve user comfort. Therefore, Gresik Public Smart Library is designed by applying a bioclimatic architecture approach as an innovative design solution in meeting the development of literacy with attention to user comfort. In designing Gresik Public Smart Library, the application of bioclimatic architecture principles will involve an in-depth analysis of the climatic conditions around the site. By understanding the local climate characteristics, the design can be optimized to create comfortable and energy efficient conditions. Furthermore, the integration of the smart library concept will be applied to improve the functionality and sustainability of the building. Thus, it is expected that Gresik Public Smart Library will become an innovative and sustainable literacy center by integrating literacy needs, user comfort, and energy efficiency.
