Abstract
This research discusses the changes in communication styles due to the phenomenon of hyperreality that appears on the TikTok among Gen Z. This phenomenon creates a new form of reality, presenting various manifestations of fake life through screens to its users, including, the communication styles present on TikTok. Using a phenomenological approach, the researcher seeks to understand the experiences of informants related to this phenomenon. Data collection methods including interviews, observations, and documentation with informants aged 18-25 years, who are university students residing and studying in Surabaya, and understand the development of TikTok trends. The research findings reveal that the TikTok hyperreality phenomenon brings changes in communication styles among Gen Z in Surabaya. These changes occur in two types: changes in everyday communication styles due to TikTok trends being carried into the real world, and differences in communication styles used in the real world and the virtual world. The motive for the changes felt by the informants comes from the intense daily exposure to TikTok content which unconsciously leads to the spontaneous implementation of TikTok trends in their daily lives. Concrete examples include using thumb and pinky gestures to describe coolness and the use of words like “anjay”, “anjir”, and “riilcuy” in family or parental environments. Meanwhile, the motive for the difference in communication styles by informants on TikTok is to shape self-image. This is done to support popularity and existence on social media, which is a reality simulated by TikTok through its algorithm.
