Abstract

Sidoarjo is one of the districts in East Java that is rich in culture and historical heritage, such as temples. A temple is a building that was used as a shrine by the Indonesian people during the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom as a medium for worshiping kings or gods. The existence of these temples is evidence of the history that carries life in the Sidoarjo region. But unfortunately, the situation of Sidoarjo, which is rich in cultural heritage, seems to be invisible and unknown, especially the next generation of the nation. Many Sidoarjo children do not know the whole existence of the temples in Sidoarjo. In addition, children's lack of interest in learning about Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) makes them increasingly indifferent to the state of nature and culture itself. The educational means of solving the problems that occur is through the design of pop- up illustration books. Through this, children can recognize and be able to preserve the temples in Sidoarjo. It is hoped that this book can be an additional learning media for children, especially elementary school students in grades 4-5 who happen to learn about historical objects and cultural heritage in IPAS subjects. It is also hoped that this book can increase children's interest in reading and foster a sense of pride in the existence of temples that are rarely known and prone to damage due to disasters. In this design process, it uses qualitative and quantitative methods which are then analyzed descriptively. The data collected aims to get solutions to existing problems. From the analysis, the results are obtained in the form of keywords, image styles to be used, story language styles, technical storytelling, unique selling points, and supporting media implementation ideas. The main concept brought to this design is information about the existence of temples in Sidoarjo. The story used is a fictional story that is packaged imaginatively with a light and non- standard language style because it adapts to the characteristics and language style of children in everyday life. The creative concept used in this design is the popup shape of the temples in Sidoarjo, interactive in the form of lift the flap, QR barcode, and crossword game. Keywords : Temple, Sidoarjo, Culture, Book, Pop-up, Kids
