Abstract

Industrial growth and development causes many industrial areas that have the potential to cause pollution because has a high content of TSS (Total Suspended Solid) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) pollutants. Electrocoagulation has a good ability to remove TSS and COD by producing flocs due to the electrochemical process where these flocs can still escape the sedimentation process. The process that can maximize the final results of the electrocoagulation process is filtration. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of adding NaCl salt to electrocoagulation processing in a flow system and analyze the effectiveness of a combination of electrocoagulation and filtration in a flow system in removing TSS and COD parameters in industrial area wastewater. Industrial area wastewater is flowed into the electrocoagulation reactor with a current strength of 5A and a voltage strength of 12 V for 60 minutes which is then flowed in a flow system or the continuous flow of wastewater into the filtration reactor. with a discharge of 0.2 L/min. Electrodes used from aluminum and filtration media used silica sand and activated carbon. The variables measured were the addition of NaCl salt 0 grams/L, 0.2 grams/L, 0.5 grams/L and a sampling time of 80-140 minutes with an interval of 20 minutes. The results obtained with the addition of 0.5 grams/L NaCl salt had high removal of TSS and COD with 80.67% and 62.04% efficiency at the sampling time to 100 minutes. The combination of electrocoagulation-filtration was able to remove TSS and COD by 90.22% and 71.68%, respectively.
